The small auxiliary fort of Kostol-Pontes guarded the southern bridgehead of the largest and most famous ancient stone bridge built by the architect Apollodores at the beginning of 2nd century AD. The counter part on the left bank of the Danube, the fort of Drobeta in modern Romania, is still visible.
